Run by the Holy Ghost Fathers, St. Mary's School Nairobi is, arguably the best school in Africa for the following reasons.

Where most schools in Kenya have ignored the extra-curricular aspects of learning, Saint Mary's needs to be applauded for its emphasis of the same.

St Mary's is the only school in Kenya with a full orchestra. It's musical productions (The Sound of Music, Oliver!, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, African Jigsaw. to name a few) are well known, and are an attestation to the kind of educational experience that St. Mary's aspires to.

Not only do students excel academically; they do extremely well in sports, music, drama, art etc.

Its rugby team, for example, is perhaps the best in the country, and has been a challenge even to the Rugby Clubs of Kenya. St Mary's holistic teachings --- educate the whole person.

Professionally, St. Mary's students are in the worlds of politics.

There is some incorrect information under entry 65, Bakili Muluzi of the Top 100 Africans of 2001.

It is not true that Cassim Chulimpha was arrested and acquitted. The person who was arrested was Brown Mpinganjira. He was accused of having embezzled about $600 US, was tried and acquitted.

Cassim Chilumpha, on the other hand, cannot account for the MK187 million (slightly over $2 million, US now, but worth much more in 2000), but has never been taken to court.

The main reason Mpinganjira was promptly arrested was because he had formed a pressure group which was opposed to Muluzi's intentions to have the constitution amended so he could run for an unlimited number of terms.

At the time of the arrest, this was just considered a malicious rumor and dismissed. But in July 2002, a motion to amend the constitution to remove term limits was tabled in parliament, and defeated, vindicating Mpinganjira.

On corruption, Muluzi's stand can hardly be considered strong. It is only the people that are considered anti-government that are prosecuted.

I would like to express my sincere congratulations for this pioneering website.  It's about time we had more news on Africa apart from the doom and gloom.  Keep up the good work!

Please add Kofi Annan (Ghana) to the Nobel Prize winners page.  He shared the Peace Prize in 2001.

Again thanks for this resource.

Someone proposed in a previous letter that Ngugi wa Thiong'o's alma mater be included in the list of top high schools given his input into contemporary African literature.

That would be Alliance High School in Kikuyu Kenya.  For more details on Ngugi as well as other prominent alumni of the school please visit: alliancealumni.org

Thanks for the wonderful site. You should include more information on Africa's enviable scenic beauty, flora and fauna, as well as environmental conservation efforts on your site.

I want to applaud you for such a fabulous and informative website. Yours is very functional and

delivers on it's purpose to educate others about the good side of Africa. I feel very proud to see such a positive work serving as a reflection of something African.

I also enjoyed reading the November 7, 2002 article special report: on who is best suited to be Kenya's next president, Mwai Kibaki or Uhuru Kenyatta? You provided a different view of the upcoming Kenyan elections.

Your article was well thought out and fresh. However, I want to point out a few issues that may not be as flattering about choosing Mr. Kenyatta as the next Kenyan President.

For one, his age is of concern. It is a general, albeit unofficial rule of thumb that African

presidents and certainly Kenyan presidents try to hold on to power for as long as possible.

If Mr. Kenyatta gets elected and does not do a good job, then it will be unfortunate if the public cannot vote him out of office. What if he turns out to be a younger version of President Daniel arap Moi?

Secondly, the very fact that Mr. Kenyatta was hand picked by Mr. Moi is very concerning. The way he became president elect was not democratic and it gives the premonition of things to come should he become president.

It is fair to suggest that his political views are very similar to Mr. Moi's. That is not a positive quality at all. It is also safe to say that Mr. Moi is going to exert a great deal of influence on the young, inexperienced potential president.

That cannot be a positive thing for Kenyans.

I would like to nominate Starehe Boys' Centre as one of the best schools in Africa. It caters for the less privileged in society and has produced some of the brightest boys in the country. It is headed by philanthropist Mr Griffin.

Thank you for the positive news on Africa. I believe that the next tide will be one of the Lions of Africa --- forget about the Asian Tigers.

The school nomination I have in mind is Mangu High School, Kenya. I was there myself and became the School Captain between 1995 and 1996.

Founded by Catholic missionaries, the school has produced a reputable core of leaders including two vice presidents --- Mwai Kibaki (running for president and leading in opinion polls), immediate former vice president, Prof. George Saitoti.

There is a leading clique of politicians from the school. It has at least one scientist at Nasa. Moreover, it has churned a stream of military officers and clergy.

Thank you. I'll be at hand to supply you with any information you may need.

Sorry for my being way late! While I was complaining about the way BBC's news is reflecting 100% always only the bad side of Africa to my friend, I learned from him that African Almanac's presence to present the positive sides as well.

What a gap filling! I didn't read any of your news or what so ever so far but I would like to appreciate who ever started this website for creating balanced sources of information about Africa.

I am sure I can communicate in the future you guys by sending my reaction to anything you posted over your site. I am expecting you to be persistent in your style and facts throughout the Almanac's life without being influenced by anything! Good job!

I was reading your defining dates in African history.

Please check the spread of Egyptian civilization from Kush, Nubia, north instead of the other way.

Look at Qustul and the finds there as well as the time line.

For your information the Sierra Leone Grammar School was founded in 1845.

It should be mentioned in your list of oldest schools in Africa. It has been a pillar in Education in West Africa.

I enjoyed going through your site. Good to hear something positive about Africa for a change.

I noticed that your list of the top 20 cities only listed 7 cities. Cairo, Durban, Zanzibar and Marrakech must surely make the list.

I would certainly place them above cities like Nairobi, Johannesburg and Port Louis!  Also "Natal" listed in your busiest airports section is actually in Brazil and not South Africa.
